Gilson is Going Greener!

Environmental sustainability is an important issue worldwide, and our employees are also passionate about this topic. We believe that companies doing more should do their part to limit waste, and Gilson is no exception.

Diverse Actions All Around Globe

From something simple like eliminating Styrofoam or plastic cups in the offices to something far more extensive, like gathering all the used face masks to have them recycled into school kits, Gilson has been making strides toward environmental sustainability for many years.

Recycling is also huge at Gilson - from paper and plastics to compost, Gilson is recycling everything it can! Gilson Purification, in Vannes, France, even installed a composting bin at their office. Free of charge from their waste management service, this bin allows the employees to recycle organic materials, which are turned into a natural fertilizer – made by Gilson, of course.

Additionally, trash bins have been provided at desks across our global offices, one for paper and one for trash. Gilson kitchens have separate bins for plastics, and many Gilson labs are now entirely digital. Another significant initiative is collecting and sorting batteries, toner cartridges, and electronics for recycling.

Durable Products & Streamlined Packaging

Of course, Gilson products are long-lasting, contributing to protecting the environment. If a device or product is built to last a long time, it stands to reason that there will be less waste. However, not everything can be made to last forever, and for those things, Gilson has come up with some inventive methods to reduce waste.

First is our Pipette Trade-In Program. Customers can send in their old pipettes and get a discount on buying new ones. That way, the old ones can be refurbished and kept out of landfills, and put into the hands of scientists in need. We also have pipette tip options that use up to 70% less plastic than regular racked tips with the added benefit of saving bench space.

Another green effort is our VERITY® CPC Systems, which use eco-friendly technology compared to traditional chromatographic separation techniques. These systems reduce the usage of solvents and eliminate waste (silica and plastic columns).

Sustainable Power

Maybe the biggest of all is the commitment Gilson has made to sustainable power. A few Gilson buildings have installed solar panels as well as sensor lighting and heat that only go on when someone enters the room. Gilson Spain had its façade upgraded to make it more energy-efficient. Many sites have carpooling or ride-sharing, and most of them have remote work policies that cut down on commuter traffic and pollution.

Gilson Plastics is the recipient of the EcoVadis Silver Award for excellence in environmental responsibility and supply chain management, among other things. Participation in the Fisher Greener Choice program in the United Kingdom means that our Gilson products on their website will have a Greener Choice logo next to them, allowing the customer to choose products with better and safer environmental effects.

Sustainability & Giving Back

We recognize the significance of our role in our local communities and our responsibility to protect our environment. So, while others are offshoring, we keep our manufacturing and logistics close to our local sites and our customers, creating jobs at home and reducing our carbon footprint by shortening our supply chain.
